Miami International Airport (MIA) is one of the busiest gateways in the United States, and the main link between the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean. For first-time visitors, the size of the airport and the customs lines can be a shock. This guide explains how MIA arrivals work and how a Miami airport car service makes the first hour of your trip easy.
The three terminals at MIA
MIA has one connected terminal building divided into three areas:
- North Terminal (Concourse D): the American Airlines hub, with domestic and international flights.
- Central Terminal (Concourses E, F and G): a mix of international and domestic carriers.
- South Terminal (Concourses H and J): many international airlines and several U.S. carriers.
Arrivals and baggage claim are on Level 1 throughout. Because airlines sometimes change concourses, we always check your actual flight rather than assume.
How long does customs take at MIA?
For international arrivals, customs and immigration is the big unknown. On a quiet morning you might be through in 20 minutes; when several wide-body flights land together, it can take more than an hour. That is why our MIA car service includes 60 minutes of free waiting for international flights and 30 minutes for domestic flights, counted from when you actually land.
Where to meet your chauffeur
With inside meet and greet, your chauffeur waits at baggage claim with a sign showing your name on domestic arrivals, or just outside the customs exit on international arrivals. Airport parking is included. You will receive a text with your chauffeur’s name and mobile number while you taxi to the gate, so you can message if you are delayed at the carousel.
Rideshare vs. private car service at MIA
Rideshare pickups at MIA happen at designated zones on the departures and arrivals levels, and prices can surge after a late flight or when several flights land at once. A private chauffeur is booked ahead, quoted upfront and waiting before you land. For families with luggage, business travelers and anyone arriving late at night, that predictability is worth a lot.
Typical drive times from MIA
- Brickell and Downtown: about 15 to 20 minutes
- Miami Beach: about 20 to 30 minutes
- PortMiami: about 20 minutes
- Coral Gables: about 10 to 15 minutes
- Sunny Isles Beach and Aventura: about 30 to 40 minutes
